Lateral (approximant) soundA lateral is the sound formed by the tip of the tongue firmly pressed against the teeth ridge or the teeth so that the air can escapes at one or both sides of the tongue. There is one lateral sound in English:/ l /6. Retroflex/approximant consonantIf the air stream is obstructed by the friction formed by the tip of the tongue against the back part of the teeth ridge and the main box of the tongue being kept low to make a curled shape, we have retroflex sound. This is also called an approximant.There is one retroflex sound in English: / r /7. Glides or semi-vowels/ approximantsA semi- vowel is a gliding sound in which the speech organs start at or near a “close” vowel and immediately move away to some other vowels.
