In 2009, Oran Park Raceway in Sydney was closed after 40 years of providing entertainment to
motoring enthusiasts from around the area. Based in the south west region of Sydney - the growth
corridor for the city - Oran Park was earmarked for redevelopment into a complete community for an
estimated 50,000 to 100,000 people over the next 20 years.
A sales and information point for the public was to be set up in a central building on the greenfield
site. For the flooring, the developers wanted a finish that would withstand considerable pedestrian
traffic but that looked attractive and required minimum maintenance. The main walk zones and café
area also needed flooring that was easy to clean.
After initially considering polished concrete, the developers opted for a specialist flooring system
from Flowcrete known as Peran Kristalina. The epoxy resin system was formulated in a special blend
of colours to deliver a look similar to that of polished concrete but with a consistent blend of
aggregates and capable of handling any dry shrinkage cracking in the underlying slab. The ecofriendly
resin system is solvent-free and very low in VOC emissions.
Following installation of the Peran Kristalina, the floor was topped with a water based polyurethane
sealer in a satin finish.
