Chemical treatment
The principal purpose of chemical sewage treatment, also known as precipitation, is to rid the water of phosphorus. Municipal sewage systems normally collect 2,5 – 4,0 grams of phosphorus per person per day, mainly in the form of phosphates. Detergents account for about 30 % of the
phosphate content; the remaining 70 % comes mainly from human excreta and food residues.
