In the northern region the stateof Punjab and national capital territory of Delhi are the two main producing locations. In the eastern region West Bengal is theonly state which produces leather and leather products significantly where kolkata is themajor producing centre. In the western region, Maharastra is the major producing state forleather and leather products where Mumbai is the major producing centre. Similarly, in thecentral region Uttar Pradesh is the major producer with Kanpur and Agra as the two majorproducing centers. Uttar Pradesh is the second major state in India in terms of number ofregistered factories with 15% of total factories in India at the end of 2004-05. The states ofTamil Nadu and Uttar Pradesh together accounted for 52% of total factories in 2004-05. WestBengal and Punjab are the other key states in India with significant number of registeredleather and footwear manufacturing units.
