The heights of buildings grewtaller and taller; telegraph and telephone wirescrisscrossed thoroughfares, creating weblikepatterns overhead; and commerce expandedat an accelerated rate, thereby increasing thenumber of advertising and promotional signsevident on any given city street. All of thesemodern developments added to the visualchaos of the new urban streetscape.During this same time period, the generalstore began to disappear in most cities andwas replaced by the modern department store.
