Coastal wave modelling is important

Coastal wave modelling is important for coastal protec-
tion, erosion and flood prevention, near-shore fishing and
marine operations e.g. installation of offshore wind farms and
oil and gas installations. It is increasingly of interest for
recreational purposes e.g. sailing and surfing. Waves are an
important oceanographic variable, being implicated in air–sea
interactions, transferringmomentumand gases across the sea
surface and playing a key role in turbulence and bottom
stress. They can also be a control variable of benthic habitats.
The POL Coastal Observatory includes real-time modelling
and observation systems in Liverpool Bay (http://cobs.pol.ac.
uk). For waves, in-situ wave buoys can give data for validation of
thewavemodels at single point locations. However, the HF radar
gives data on the spatial distribution of wave spectra on a grid of
similar resolution O (1 km) to the coastalwavemodels, aswell as
currents (Wyatt, 1997; Krogstad et al., 1999;Wyatt et al., 2003).
Sources of model error can include the boundary and wind
forcing and uncertainties inmodel parameters.
