In July 1997, the name of the former National Institute of Hygienic Sciences was changed to the
National Institute of Health Sciences. In addition to its long-standing work related to testing and research on drugs, quasi-drugs, cosmetics, medical devices, foods, poisonous and deleterious
substances, the Institute supervised the Pharmaceuticals and Medical Devices Evaluation Center to undertake the reviews required for approval to manufacture or import drugs, quasi-drugs, cosmetics and medical devices, as well as the reexamination and the reevaluation of drugs, and medical devices. Thereafter, the Evaluation Center was incorporated into the Pharmaceuticals and Medical Devices Agency (PMDA, KIKO) in April 2004.
