For the BRT service outside the BRT corridor (and the urban bus routes), as they operate as an ‘open system’ outside the BRT corridor, the BRT buses will be equipped with on-board validators and therefore the Smartcard or NFC device would be used to ‘pay’ for the trip at the front entrance door. Boarding for all curbside services will be via the right hand side front door to ensure that passengers validate the tickets at the machine. Before alighting the vehicle at the curbside, passengers will swipe the card on validator reader mounted in the exit door on the right hand side of the bus to confirm the journey. In the case of single journey tickets for the urban buses, on the basis that this is an ‘open system’ the issuing of single journey smartcards may mean that there are a significant number that are unreturned at the end of the journey and as such the use of 2D barcoded paper tickets and NFC device connection for the singlejourneys would be suggested as a preferred option. Passengers will be required to validate the single-journey tickets on exit as there may be the requirement for a transfer to another urban service or the BRT and this would require validation of the trip.
