The season for flowering, fruiting and production of seeds andpropagules are not the same as the season of planting in degradedareas. The fruiting season of nursery raised saplings viz. Avicenniamarina and Avicennia officinalis, which are mainly used inrestoration, is October to November. However, the areas will besuitable for planting only during July to November. Hence, theseedlings raised during the first year will be used for planting inthe second year, due to the mismatch of seasons between fruitingand planting. It was also seen during the implementation of theproject from 1997 to 2003, that the rate of survival of nurseryraised saplings is 50% greater when compared to direct dibblingof seeds. The casualty is due to the reason that the crabs damagedthe sprouting seeds by eating the hypocotyle. The chemical reactionthat takes place in the sprouting seeds emits a gaseous smell
