B3.2.4 Once a person has entered a protected escape route it is preferable that they can staywithin the safety of that route until they reach the outside of the building. However, it isacceptable in some circumstances for the escape route to include a portion of the routewhich traverses an unprotected area e.g. a reception area or hotel lobby. Thisapproach would be considered more acceptable if there was an alternative escaperoute available from the hotel which exits direct to open air away from the building.Even if there is a second escape route this approach should always be subjected to athorough risk assessment to consider the risks posed by the nature of the receptionarea or lobby and its contents. Consideration should be given to providing enhancedfire detection in the reception area or lobby to give an early warning of fire or toproviding automatic sprinkler protection within the space to control and possiblyextinguish any fire which may occur.
