soon, the town of Ketchikan in northern Alaska will have a new bridge connecting it to the island of Gravina. The cost? If this does not seem to make to you, then you are most likely unfamiliar with the term "pork barrel project". A pork barrel project is a building project which benefits a small number of people but is paid for with public tax money, meaning that every citizen from it or not. Here's how it work.
First, pork barrel projects need the support of a powerful politician. In the case, of the Ketchikan-Gravian bridge, it's Alaska congressmen. These pilitician support pork barrel projects because in return, the citizens of that area typically vote for them in the next election. Next, the piliticians have to secure money in the goverment's budget to pay for the project. This is usually done at the last time, so that people who disagree with the project do not have enough time to try to stop it. Once the goverment has approved the budget, then the pork barrel project is safely on its way.
