Lipids are important to membrane formation and energy storage. There have been few studies of the role of ethylene on the synthesis and degradation of these cellular components. Ethephon was shown to increase the incorporation of acetate into linoleic acid in carrot disks. However, a similar effect was not observed for other fatty acids such as palmitic, stearic, and oleic (JAW74331). The senescence of floral tissues was accompanied by a decrease in the levels of polar lipids and a decrease in their synthesis. (BEU77888, SYL87331).
