4.5. The Government Fisheries (Protection) Ordinance, 1959The Ordinance makes provisions for preventing unauthorisedfishing in fisheries belonging to, or under the management and control of the government (The Government Fisheries (Protection) Ordinance,1959). Under that authority, the government can declare any fishery to be a khash managed fishery and can impose licensing options to restrict unauthorisedfishing there.4.6. The Marine Fisheries Ordinance, 1983Under the provisions of this Ordinance, the Marine Fisheries Wing of the Department of Fisheries (DoF) is authorized to deal with matters relating to marine fisheries exploitation, including licensing and monitoring of operations of fishing vessels (The Marine Fisheries Ordinance, 1983). The government can also declare any area of the Bangladesh fisheries’ waters to be a marine reserve with a view to ensure breeding of fish and shrimp. So far, four locations in the Bay of Bengal in the territorial waters of Bangladesh have been declared marine protected areas (Hoq, 2007).
