To assess the maximum pressure that might be safely applied to anopen horizontal joint a simple spreadsheet was prepared that considers at a joint a given distance below the crest, between two vertical construction joints, i.e. a block of 12m, for various percentages of the surface area of the horizontalconstruction joint that is open, at what pressure the vertical load becomes negative, i.e. theblock might be lifted.Graphs giving results for a variety of conditions are shown below. For instance, using these results and considering the results for a joint20m below the crest: in which 50% is a poor joint, the remaining horizontal construction joint has a tensilestrength of 0.7MPa, water under pressure is introduced into the RCC borehole,a pressure of approximately 900KPa would further open the joint.
