Hey guys! Today I’m going to write about dolphins, because, well… who doesn’t like dolphins right? :D But the actual reason for why I chose dolphins is that everybody knows they’re cute, curios and interesting, but do you guys know what family they’re listed in, or what kind of senses they have? Well that is what I’ll write about. Dolphins are marine mammals closely related to porpoises. There are about 40 different species of dolphin in 17 genera(- in biology: a genus is a taxonomic rank used in the biological classification of living and fossil organisms.) The smallest dolphin is 1.2 m (4ft) and 40 kg (90lb). This dolphin is the Maui’s dolphin. Up to 9.5 m (30ft) and weighing 10 tones is the Orca (or Killer Whale) Dolphins are found almost everywhere in the world, mostly in the shallower seas of the continental shelves and are carnivores. They mostly eat fish and squid. The family Delphinidae, the largest in the Cetacean order, evolved about ten million years ago during the Miocene. I know, I know. Lot of giberish… Let me try and break it down for you: The Oceanic Dolphins are members of the Cetacean family Delphinidae. These marine mammals are related to whales and porpoises. The order Cetacea includes the marine mammals commonly known as whales, dolphins and porpoises. And lastly, the Miocene is the first geological epoch of the Neogene Period and extends from about 23.03 to 5.332 million years ago. Let’s just say, that the Miocene was… a long, long time ago! :D The name Dolphin is originally from Greek Delphís, which was related to the Greek Delphus – “Womb”. The name was transmitted by the Latin Delphinus, which in Medival Latin became Dolfinus and in Old French Daulphin, which reintroduced the ph into the word Dolphin. How to list Dolphins: This is going to be a long post. I know it already :D . But don’t worry, the pictures are coming up! :) So. Let’s list those Dolphins!
