Higher domestic scrap prices unlikely to support export offers in Japan

Domestic prices and demand for scrap have been rising in Japan this week. Nevertheless, Japanese exporters will
fail to sign contracts at higher prices given heavy stocks at South Korean importers and softening US material, market
players believe. Moreover, they are sure in the circumstances export prices will go down even despite strong domestic
demand.
On September 17, Japan’s Tokyo Steel announced an increase in purchase scrap prices by JPY 500/t ($5/t) for
its Kyushu and Utsunomiya plants, which come into effect on September 18. The company raised buying prices twice
a week ago. Tokyo Steel’s price is a guideline for domestic market in Japan. The rise is driven by a need to replenish
stocks.
Nevertheless, the export market sees a decline in buying, unlike the
domestic one. US scrap suppliers cut their prices by $6/t early this week
and the fall in Japanese scrap tags will follow soon. Rising domestic
scrap prices are providing only a temporary delay for suppliers. “Japanese
exporters will hardly maintain prices for long. A drop by JPY 500/t ($5/t) is
guaranteed to happen by the end of the month,” one foreign buyer told
Metal Expert. Sufficient scrap inventories in South Korea are still the main
lever of pressure on suppliers.
