Over the years, Dell tight relationships with original design manufacturers (ODMs) have been one of its biggest advantages – allowing it to be more nimble and, often, faster at getting new technology to market than its rivals.

Last week, Dell introduced a new system, the OptiPlex 3030 All-in-One desktop, with a chassis that uses a minimum of 10 percent closed-loop, post-consumer recycled plastics. That might not seem like a lot, but that achievement just earned UL Environment’s first certification for manufacturing with closed-loop recycled plastics.

“Reclaiming and reusing post-consumer plastics to manufacture new computers allows Dell to reduce the environmental impact of its materials sourcing and manufacturing processes, which benefits everyone,” said Sara Greenstein, president of UL Supply Chain & Sustainability, commenting about the development.

Scott O’Connell, director of environmental affairs at Dell, said the company’s long-time relationship with Wistron GreenTech – a division of one of its longstanding ODMs – was instrumental in pulling this off. The planning for this particular milestone reaches back at least three years ago, when the Wistron division was created and the two began brainstorming about potential uses for the e-waste being collected from Dell customers. “We are starting with the plastics but there are opportunities to expand,” O’Connell said.

Dell supports an extensive e-waste collection program, including free consumer recycling options in 78 countries. What to do with all this stuff? The company’s goal is to include up to 50 million pounds of recycled-content plastics and other “sustainable” materials in its products by 2020 — theoretically saving money and doing right by the environment at the same time.

One of the biggest challenges in doing this has been ensuring consistent materials quality: the properties of a water bottle, for example, are very different from plastics from a retired computer chassis, O’Connell noted. “Now that we have qualified the resins, it’s a question of how we do the electronics right,” he said, adding that there is already a relatively well-defined process for recovery the valuable metals found in electronics.

Dell will use the lessons learned through the OptiPlex 3030 launch – the rollout for the computer begins in June – to inform its plans for other products, including laptops and monitor back panels.

Wistron handles dismantling, refurbishing and refining parts from collected computers in Texas, where Wistron GreenTech is based, and in Kunshan, China, the location for Wistron Advanced Materials. The circuit boards and batteries are handled in Texas, while the resins are managed in China. These locations are already integral to Dell’s existing supply chain, so it makes it simpler to layer these processes into Dell’s business-as-usual operations over time, O’Connell said.
