The other hurdle is to help trainees to become more active in theone domain in which the MRI model calls for therapeutic activism, thatof assessing and interrupting sequences of attempted solutions. To beactive in this domain, the trainee needs to acquire the ability to elicitfrom clients clear problem definitions, to devise and “sell” reframes,and to devise and deliver directives. Live supervision may be used tohelp the trainee acquire these skills. When it is, the supervisor’s mainintervention will be to phone in directives to the trainee. She may directthe trainee to ask more questions in a particular area. She maydirect the trainee to use a certain reframe. Or she may give the traineea directive to be delivered verbatim to the client.
