Municipal Wastewater SourceOur previous studies have shown that better productivity can be obtained with centrate thanwith primary influent or secondary effluent [8, 9]. This study was conducted at the MetroPlant where centrate was made available to us. MCES operates seven wastewater treatmentfacilities and treats an average of approximately 250 MGD wastewater. The St. Paul MetroPlant is the largest facility in the system with a 185-MGD treatment capacity. The Metroplant utilizes a biological phosphorus removal system to meet its discharge limit of 1 mg/Ltotal phosphorus on a 12-month rolling average. The sludge generated at the Metro plantare dewatered using centrifuges and then combusted in fluid bed incinerators equipped withheat recovery boilers. This process requires no additional inputs of fuel and creates heat andelectricity for the buildings.
