than pigment systems because, as with all colorants, it is the surface layer that isaffected by exterior conditions such as light and, while dyes will similarly sufferfading on the surface, their transparency gives a real depth of colour unaffectedby surface influences. Dyes can also be subject to migration of colour, which isthe subject of legislation for critical products, such as food-contact applicationsand toys. The choice between pigment or dyestuff depends on the compatibility of theresin matrix and the need for solubility. Other factors influencing selectioninclude stability of colour during use, especially on exposure to light, air, andmoisture, but also during processing. Some thermoplastics, such as theengineering types, require higher temperatures for moulding or extrusion, which may discolour a pigment system that is perfectly satisfactory with othermaterials at lower processing temperatures. Other important factors arestrength/depth of colour, electrical properties, and resistance to migration.6.7.3 Liquid coloursA third form in which colorants are supplied is in liquid form, using a very precisemetering unit mounted on the processing machine. As a direct method ofcolouring on the machine, this technology has been held back by technical
