Just-in-time (JIT) is a major operations management philosophy, developed in Japanin the 1980s, that is designed to achieve high-volume production using minimalamounts of inventory. This is achieved through coordination of the flow of materialsso that the right parts arrive at the right place in the right quantity; hence the termjust-in-time. However, JIT is much more than the coordinated movement of goods. Itis an all-inclusive organizational philosophy that employs teams of workers to achievecontinuous improvement in processes and organizational efficiency by eliminatingall organizational waste. Although JIT was first used in manufacturing, it has beenimplemented in the service sector, for example, in the food service industry. JIT hashad a profound impact on the way companies manage their operations. It is creditedwith helping turn many companies around and is used by companies such as Honda,Toyota, and General Motors. JIT promises to continue to transform businesses inthe future.
