Main purpose is to ensure the safety of transport at sea. All stakeholders have an incentive to encourage compliance in order to avoid disruptions in the supply chain. Attached document provides more insight and industry FAQS for you to share with factories, in case, they are not aware of the SOLAS amendments via other channel. 1. BackgroundSOLAS = The Safety of Life at Sea Convention, SOLAS amendments were adopted by the International Maritime Organization (IMO) in November 2014 and will be a mandatory regulation from July 01, 2016. In other words, any party involved in international transport, including shippers is obliged to follow the new regulation. 2. Basic PrinciplesEffective from July 01, 2016, the new mandatory rules concerning the requirement for shippers to verify the gross mass of a container carrying cargo. Without a Verified Gross Mass the packed container shall not be loaded aboard ship. Estimating weight is NOT permitted. The rules prescribe two methods by which the shipper may obtain the verified gross mass of a packed container:-• Method 1 : Weigh the packed container tare weight + cargo weight together or• Method 2: Weigh the cargo and other contents and add tare weight of the container 3. Scope of applicabilityThis regulation is applicable to all adidas group’s international sea freight shipments. The regulation states the following:a. Container cargoes ship from Global origins to Global destinations (This is where our goods fall under)b. Standard sea freight containerc. Tank containersd. Flat racks, ande. Bulk containers 4. Key highlightsa. The shipper (i.e. Factory) is responsible for providing the verified container weight to the terminal/carrier- Shipper = party identified on maritime carrier’s Bill of Lading- For CFS/CY and CFS/CFS cargoes, 3PL act as the shipper for providing the VGM to the carrier based on the cargoes weight received from its shipper (factory) plus the packed container tare weight- For CY/CY cargoes, factory is responsible to provide the VGM of the packed container to the 3PL/carrier- How to transfer the VGM between the shipper and 3PL/carrier is under discussion among the involved parties, details to be shared at later stageb. Gross mass of a packed container = gross weight of total packages in a container including pallet and all packing material + the tare container massc. Weighing equipment must meet national certification and calibration requirementsd.
