Women rising up global management stakes, but rarely to the very topThe number of women in senior and middle management positions around the world has increased over the last 20 years but women are still under-represented in top management, according to a wide-ranging new study. There has been progress on getting more women into management but it is slow and at this pace it will be more than 100 years before parity is achieved, according to the International Labour Organization. Its Bureau for Employers’ Activities has brought together data from around the world to try to provide the most up-to-date and global picture on women in the business world.Women in Business and Management: Gaining Momentum ranks countries by female board representation and women in management and makes the case for more women at the top of business.Deborah France-Massin, director of the ILO Bureau for Employers’ Activities explains:Our research is showing that women’s ever increasing participation in the labour market has been the biggest engine of global growth and competitiveness. An increasing number of studies are also demonstrating positive links between women’s participation in top decision making teams and structures and business performance. But there is a long way to go before we achieve true gender equality in the workplace, especially when it comes to top management positions...Unless action is taken, it could take 100 to 200 years to achieve parity at the top.
