LocationMurray Bridge is located along the River Murray,approximately 75 kilometres east of Metropolitan Adelaideand approximately 45 kilometres east of Mount Barker.European settlement of Murray Bridge dates back to the1880’s.The River Murray crossing, for which Murray Bridge wasnamed after, was opened in 1879 for road traffic. TheBridge is historically significant as the first crossing of theRiver Murray in South Australia which provided an importantlink for road and rail to the eastern states. Subsequentrailway and wharf facilities created a busy centre forriver trade, resulting in the establishment of housing andsupporting industry.Murray Bridge was concentrated along the east-westtransit route formed by Adelaide Road and its westernconnection (Bridge Street) to the bridge. The planning ofMurray Bridge was generally determined by geographicaland transport infrastructural constraints, including therailway line to the north, River Murray to the east and SouthEastern Freeway to the south.In 2011, the population of Murray Bridge and surroundswas estimated at 21,000.
