~ The cables are made using post stitches:
Front Post Treble (fptr): Yarn over. Insert your hook around the post
of the stitch below, putting it in from the front and bringing it back
out to the front. Yarn over and pull up a loop. *Yarn over and pull
through two loops on the hook*. Repeat from * to * to complete the
stitch.
Back Post Treble (bptr): Yarn over. Insert your hook around the post
of the stitch below, putting it in from the back and bringing it back
out to the back. Yarn over and pull up a loop. *Yarn over and pull
through two loops on the hook*. Repeat from * to * to complete the
stitch.
~When crossing cables, it’s easy to go back into the wrong stitches.
In the picture, you would stitch in the order 3, 4, 1, 2 to create the
crossed cable.
~ If you find you are getting gaps after your post stitches, you can
make 2 stitches together to cover this. If you look behind your post
stitches, you’ll see that the top of the stitches are still visible.
Working into the last post stitch (circled in the picture) and the next
stitch, (yarn over, put your hook into the stitch, yarn over and pull
up a loop. Yarn over and pull through two loops on your hook) twice.
Yarn over and pull through all 3 loops on your hook twice to
complete the joined stitch.
the 4 back post trebles in row 5 (into the crossed stitches below) can be rather tricky, as it’s easy to
get the stitches crossed over again. Make sure you flatten the row out so that you get them in the
right order.
~ The chain 2 at the beginning of each row does not count as a stitch
Materials
The scarf can be made with any length of aran weight yarn, although I would suggest a minimum of
140 meters/150 yards. It’s often easier to see the cables in solid colours rather than variegated, but
both create a lovely effect.
