Nandeshwar Temple is a traditionally prominent Shiva temple located close to the Nandbhavan Temple in Nandgaon near Mathura. The Shiv Linga in the temple hall is many years old and is said to have been installed by Lord Krishna's grandson Vajranabha. One among the 5 chief Shiva temples seated in the sacred region of Braj, the Nandeshwar Mahadev Temple stands as a sentinel guarding the house of the eternal master, Nandbhavan from any evil factors.
The story from the Hindu tradition that surrounds this temple is an interesting one. It is said that once Lord Shiva in his usual avatar of coiled snakes and ash-smear came to take the blessings of Lord Krishna in his angelic child form. Shiva's bizarre appearance scared Mother Yashoda who plainly refused to let him in, fearing he might scare his little darling. A disappointed Shiva returned to the forest where he started meditating and asking Lord Krishna for his blessings. Consequently, baby Krishna started crying unremittingly thereby forcing Yashoda Ma to call for the mystical saint. When Krishna finally saw Lord Shiva, he smiled spreading an unparalleled joy to everyone around including mother Yashoda. Pleased, Mother asked Shiva if there was anything else she could do. In reply, Shiva lovingly requested for Krishna's divine morsel, a promise which till date is being valued as prasad in the Nadeshwar Mahadev Temple after offering it to Lord Krishna and Balaram in the Nanadbhavan as Mahaprasad and bhog.
