Figure 8-9 illustrates how EAP is used in IEEE 802.1x. After the initial association requestis set by the supplicant device to the authenticator, EAP is then used to begin a “dialog”between the two. Once the authenticator sends the information to the RADIUS server, EAPcontinues to be used for sending request, response, and acceptance frames between theauthenticator and the supplicant device. Once the device has been authenticated by RADIUS, afinal handshake called a four-way handshake takes place.
