1. Introduction
This User Manual will provide an overview of the Honda Motorcycle Communication Interface
(MCI) that is used together with Honda diagnostic software, Motorcycle Communication System
(MCS). Everything contained in this manual is based on the latest product information available at
the time of publication. The right is reserved to make changes at any time without notice.
1.1 Foreword
The MCI and MCS are designed for use by trained service personnel to diagnose and repair
motorcycle electronic systems. Every attempt has been made to provide complete and accurate
technical information based on factory service information available at the time of publication. To
increase their effectiveness with the MCI, users should familiarize themselves with the format and
information contained in this guide. The MCI and MCS provide the following capabilities:
• Data Transfer and Control Module Update
• Future expandability, including diagnostic applications of MCS.
1.2 Location of Vehicle Data Link Connector (DLC)
For the location of vehicle DLC connector refer to the Service Manual for the vehicle being tested.
1.3 CAUTIONS AND NOTICES
In this User Guide:
• CAUTION: indicates there is a possibility of injury to you or other people.
• NOTICE: indicates the possibility of damage to the component being repaired.
Operating Precautions
CAUTION
When performing any checks with the engine running in an enclosed space such as a garage, be
sure there is proper ventilation. Never inhale exhaust gases; they contain carbon monoxide – a
colorless, odorless, extremely dangerous gas which can cause unconsciousness or death.
NOTICE
• Make sure all cables and adapters are firmly connected before starting to use the MCI.
• Always read the instructions completely before attempting a new procedure.
1.4 FCC COMPLIANCE (only USA)
This equipment has been tested and found to comply with the limits for a Class A digital device,
pursuant to Part 15 of the FCC rules. These limits are designed to provide reasonable protection
against harmful interference when the equipment is operated in a commercial environment.
This equipment generates, uses, and can radiate radio frequency energy. If not installed and used
in accordance with the instruction manual, it may cause harmful interference to radio
communications. Operation of this equipment in a residential area is likely to cause harmful
interference, in which case the user will be required to correct the interference at his or her own
expense.

1.5 Taking the Product Back and Recycling (only EU)
Applicable to product that is sold into the European Union, the European Union has passed a
directive called Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment, or WEEE for short, to ensure that
systems are setup throughout the EU for the collection, treating and recycling of electronic waste.
This ensures that the devices are recycled in a resource-saving way representing no danger to
health or the environment. The WEEE symbol is shown at the right. The WEEE symbol on the
product or its packaging shows that the product must not be disposed of as residual garbage. The
user is obliged to collect the old devices separately and return them to the WEEE take-back
system for recycling
