In laboratory fermentation experiments using the seaweed Saccharina japonica as feedstock,
the researchers found that the modified E. coli strain could accumulate ethanol to a
concentration of 4.7% (vol.) and produce an ethanol yield of 281 g per kg of dry algae, which is
more than 80% of the theoretical maximum that could be achieved by full conversion of the algal saccharides.
