VThousands of people lined the streets of Sydney on Saturday (April 25) morning to watch the annual march of veterans and present day service personnel marking the anniversary of the Gallipoli landings.
This year commemorates the 100th anniversary of the doomed World War One campaign at Gallipoli, Turkey.
Watched by an estimated record crowd, some 20,000 veterans and relatives of soldiers from the Australian and New Zealand Army Corps (ANZAC), took part in the march through the city centre.
"I'm very grateful to have the opportunity. Obviously I wish I could have done it years ago but that wasn't possible. With the help and support of my husband Frank we've been able to make this journey and it's been well worth it. Just very, very pleased and very emotional about it," said Lindsay Bateman, who travelled from Michigan to watch the ceremony after years of marking the anniversary in the US.
"I figured I better come here and have a look and see what it's all about," said local man Adam Vaxter, on his first visit to the ANZAC Day Parade, "My great uncle was in World War One, he was in France. I didn't know much about him so I come to have a look," he said.
"A little sombre, reflective, proud as well, very proud," said local woman Michelle Salbery.
"A lot of people have given their lives and a lot of families have lost and it's good to come down and show your support," former US navy sailor Jesse Vyhnalek, who lives in Sydney.
The battle on Turkey's Gallipoli peninsula was one of the bloodiest of the Great War, as it was known then, as thousands of ANZAC soldiers were cut down by machine-gun and artillery fire as they struggled ashore on a narrow beach.
The ill-fated Gallipoli campaign would eventually claim more than 130,000 lives, 87,000 of them from the Ottoman side, before the Turks finally repulsed the poorly planned Allied campaign.
