You are required to write two news reports based on the instructions below.
1. Carefully read all the information which is provided below and use it to write a news report of between ten and fifteen sentences. The information is concerned with the problem of people being paid large amounts of money to donate their kidney so it can be transplanted into someone with a serious kidney disease.Try to write in a style which would be suitable for publication in an English-language Vietnamese newspaper or news website.
There is more information provided below than you will be able to fit into your short report (of no more than ten sentences). As a result you need to look through all the information and decide what parts of it you will include in your report, and what parts you will leave out. In deciding what to include, you should consider what information is the most “newsworthy” – that is to say, those things which are going to be most interesting to your readers because, for example, they are surprising, or unexpected, or unusual or frightening or likely to make them feel sad or angry. Background information:Kidneys are the organs in the human body that help filter waste products from the blood. They are also involved in regulating blood pressureand red blood cell production in the body. While all humans are born with two kidneys, they can live normal, healthy lives with only one. A number of diseases can cause “kidney failure” (when the kidneys stop working) which can eventually result in death. In some cases, the only effective treatment is a “kidney transplant” - that is to say,the sick person receives a healthy kidney which has been removed in a surgical operation from either a person who has just
died, or from a healthy, living person. In the case of the healthy, living person, this is possible because normally they can go on living a healthy life with their one remaining kidney. However, they may later have serious health problems themselves if their one remaining kidney is injured in an accident, or if they are infected with a disease which damages their own remaining kidney. In some cases people will donate a kidney to a sick family member or friendas a matter of charity in order to save that sick person’s life. In other cases, peopleare offered large amounts of money to get them tosell a kidney for transplantation to sick person whom they don’t know or haven’t ever met.

“Yes, certainly, please go ahead and ask.

“I understand that over the past two years the local government authorities here have received dozens of applications from local people to be able to donate their kidneys for transplantation. That’s to have a kidney surgically removed so it can be transplanted to someone with a life-threatening kidney disease. Is that correct?
Answer
“Yes that’s correct, and we are rather worried about it because the people applying to be able to donate their kidney are usually poor with large debts. We don’t think they have fully thought about all the consequences and they just want an easy way to get out of their financial difficulties”
Question
“And so what happened? Did the local authorities give their approval for these kidney donations to take place? Did they approve these applications?
Answer
“In fact, no! Approval wasn’t given, but later the authorities heard some of these people who had applied had gone ahead, without approval, and they had sold their kidneys to a stranger to earn the money to pay their debts. The local authoritiesonly learned about these kidney donations after they had already been done”.

“Do you know how much money these people have been paid for their kidney?”
Answer
“We believe that these people have been paid VND120 million, sometimes more. And so we understand why they may be influenced to go ahead, without really considering the consequences”

“Apart from the problem that these people have gone ahead with the transplant without approval, are there any other concerns?”
Answer
“Yes, indeed. We are concerned that these people may not be aware of all the risks. They are desperate to get the money so they just don’t think ahead. They don’t consider the real possibility that they may damage their own remaining kidney in an accident, or they may get a disease which will do damage to their remaining kidney. Without a second kidney, their own livesmay be at risk. They may end up needing a kidney transplant themselves.”

“Have you heard of anyone having this problem – that is to say, have there been cases where someone sold their kidney to a stranger and then ended up with health problems relating to their own kidney? Has this actually happened in this district?”
Answer
“Yes, it has, there’s one serious case I know of. It involves a man in Hamlet 6, a Mr. Ho Van Tranh, 43, who donated a kidney for VND120 million ($6,000). He had serious debts and so sold his kidney for the money to pay off his debts. He now has serious health problems. I recommend you approach is family, they may be willing to tell you more about his case.”

“And what about rumours that criminal gangs have been involved here, luring local people into selling their kidneys. Is that true? Are these rumours accurate?
Answer
We haven’t been able to confirm that criminal gangs are involved. We don’t know. The police are still investigating. However, I can tell you about the case of one man which is rather worrying. It involves a Mr. Le Van Gion, a farmer in Hamlet 6 of ThanhPhu Commune. He submitted an application earlier this year to donate his kidney to someone in Hanoi. His application wasn’t approved but he left home soon after and hasn’t been heard of since, now for more than a month. We believe he went off to sell his kidney. His family haven’t heard from him at all, which is unusual. They are now very worried about his safety. It’s possible a criminal gang may have been involved.”

“I understand that you donated a kidnbey for VND120 million. Is that correct?
Answer (Mr Ho Van Tranh)
“Yes, that’s correct. I did it because I was so much in debt. I did it six months ago. It was for a man in HCM City who I was told was very ill with kidney disease. Both his kidneys had failed. He was going to die unless he got a kidney transplant. I didn’t know him before. I met him once in HCM City, before the operation to do the transplant, but I don’t know where he lives. So I haven’t kept in contact with him and I don’t know his situation now.”
Question
“What are your feelings now, about your decision to sell your kidney? Was it the right decision? Do you regret doing that now?”
Answer
“Well yes I do, I really regret it now. When I came back home after the operation to remove my kidney, my mother saw the scar from the operation on my stomach and she started to cry. She was very upset. And now as a result of the operation I am very weak. I cannot do anything that needs me to be strong. My arms and legs are trembling and shaking all the time. I can’t work. Now I have to depend on my wife. I really regret selling my kidney now.”
2. Make up a news story (either event or issue story) about an incident happening at one of the dormitories of Quy Nhon University. (about 200 words)

Background information:Kidneys are the organs in the human body that help filter waste products from the blood. They are also involved in regulating blood pressureand red blood cell production in the body. While all humans are born with two kidneys, they can live normal, healthy lives with only one. A number of diseases can cause “kidney failure” (when the kidneys stop working) which can eventually result in death. In some cases, the only effective treatment is a “kidney transplant” - that is to say,the sick person receives a healthy kidney which has been removed in a surgical operation from either a person who has just
died, or from a healthy, living person. In the case of the healthy, living person, this is possible because normally they can go on living a healthy life with their one remaining kidney. However, they may later have serious health problems themselves if their one remaining kidney is injured in an accident, or if they are infected with a disease which damages their own remaining kidney. In some cases people will donate a kidney to a sick family member or friendas a matter of charity in order to save that sick person’s life. In other cases, peopleare offered large amounts of money to get them tosell a kidney for transplantation to sick person whom they don’t know or haven’t ever met.

“I understand that over the past two years the local government authorities here have received dozens of applications from local people to be able to donate their kidneys for transplantation. That’s to have a kidney surgically removed so it can be transplanted to someone with a life-threatening kidney disease. Is that correct?
Answer
“Yes that’s correct, and we are rather worried about it because the people applying to be able to donate their kidney are usually poor with large debts. We don’t think they have fully thought about all the consequences and they just want an easy way to get out of their financial difficulties”
Question
“And so what happened? Did the local authorities give their approval for these kidney donations to take place? Did they approve these applications?
Answer
“In fact, no! Approval wasn’t given, but later the authorities heard some of these people who had applied had gone ahead, without approval, and they had sold their kidneys to a stranger to earn the money to pay their debts. The local authoritiesonly learned about these kidney donations after they had already been done”.

“Do you know how much money these people have been paid for their kidney?”
Answer
“We believe that these people have been paid VND120 million, sometimes more. And so we understand why they may be influenced to go ahead, without really considering the consequences”

“Apart from the problem that these people have gone ahead with the transplant without approval, are there any other concerns?”
Answer
“Yes, indeed. We are concerned that these people may not be aware of all the risks. They are desperate to get the money so they just don’t think ahead. They don’t consider the real possibility that they may damage their own remaining kidney in an accident, or they may get a disease which will do damage to their remaining kidney. Without a second kidney, their own livesmay be at risk. They may end up needing a kidney transplant themselves.”

“Have you heard of anyone having this problem – that is to say, have there been cases where someone sold their kidney to a stranger and then ended up with health problems relating to their own kidney? Has this actually happened in this district?”
Answer
“Yes, it has, there’s one serious case I know of. It involves a man in Hamlet 6, a Mr. Ho Van Tranh, 43, who donated a kidney for VND120 million ($6,000). He had serious debts and so sold his kidney for the money to pay off his debts. He now has serious health problems. I recommend you approach is family, they may be willing to tell you more about his case.”

“And what about rumours that criminal gangs have been involved here, luring local people into selling their kidneys. Is that true? Are these rumours accurate?
Answer
We haven’t been able to confirm that criminal gangs are involved. We don’t know. The police are still investigating. However, I can tell you about the case of one man which is rather worrying. It involves a Mr. Le Van Gion, a farmer in Hamlet 6 of ThanhPhu Commune. He submitted an application earlier this year to donate his kidney to someone in Hanoi. His application wasn’t approved but he left home soon after and hasn’t been heard of since, now for more than a month. We believe he went off to sell his kidney. His family haven’t heard from him at all, which is unusual. They are now very worried about his safety. It’s possible a criminal gang may have been involved.”

“Yes, that’s correct. I did it because I was so much in debt. I did it six months ago. It was for a man in HCM City who I was told was very ill with kidney disease. Both his kidneys had failed. He was going to die unless he got a kidney transplant. I didn’t know him before. I met him once in HCM City, before the operation to do the transplant, but I don’t know where he lives. So I haven’t kept in contact with him and I don’t know his situation now.”

“What are your feelings now, about your decision to sell your kidney? Was it the right decision? Do you regret doing that now?”
Answer
“Well yes I do, I really regret it now. When I came back home after the operation to remove my kidney, my mother saw the scar from the operation on my stomach and she started to cry. She was very upset. And now as a result of the operation I am very weak. I cannot do anything that needs me to be strong. My arms and legs are trembling and shaking all the time. I can’t work. Now I have to depend on my wife. I really regret selling my kidney now.”

They are also involved in regulating blood pressureand red blood cell production in the body. While all humans are born with two kidneys, they can live normal, healthy lives with only one. A number of diseases can cause “kidney failure” (when the kidneys stop working) which can eventually result in death. In some cases, the only effective treatment is a “kidney transplant” - that is to say,the sick person receives a healthy kidney which has been removed in a surgical operation from either a person who has just
died, or from a healthy, living person. In the case of the healthy, living person, this is possible because normally they can go on living a healthy life with their one remaining kidney. However, they may later have serious health problems themselves if their one remaining kidney is injured in an accident, or if they are infected with a disease which damages their own remaining kidney. In some cases people will donate a kidney to a sick family member or friendas a matter of charity in order to save that sick person’s life. In other cases, peopleare offered large amounts of money to get them tosell a kidney for transplantation to sick person whom they don’t know or haven’t ever met.

“Mr Nguyen, may I ask you about what has been happening in connection with kidney selling and transplants in your district?”
Answer (Mr Nguyen)
“Yes, certainly, please go ahead and ask.
Question
“I understand that over the past two years the local government authorities here have received dozens of applications from local people to be able to donate their kidneys for transplantation. That’s to have a kidney surgically removed so it can be transplanted to someone with a life-threatening kidney disease. Is that correct?
Answer
“Yes that’s correct, and we are rather worried about it because the people applying to be able to donate their kidney are usually poor with large debts. We don’t think they have fully thought about all the consequences and they just want an easy way to get out of their financial difficulties”
Question
“And so what happened? Did the local authorities give their approval for these kidney donations to take place? Did they approve these applications?
Answer
“In fact, no! Approval wasn’t given, but later the authorities heard some of these people who had applied had gone ahead, without approval, and they had sold their kidneys to a stranger to earn the money to pay their debts. The local authoritiesonly learned about these kidney donations after they had already been done”.
Question
“Do you know how much money these people have been paid for their kidney?”
Answer
“We believe that these people have been paid VND120 million, sometimes more. And so we understand why they may be influenced to go ahead, without really considering the consequences”
Question
“Apart from the problem that these people have gone ahead with the transplant without approval, are there any other concerns?”
Answer
“Yes, indeed. We are concerned that these people may not be aware of all the risks. They are desperate to get the money so they just don’t think ahead. They don’t consider the real possibility that they may damage their own remaining kidney in an accident, or they may get a disease which will do damage to their remaining kidney. Without a second kidney, their own livesmay be at risk. They may end up needing a kidney transplant themselves.”
Question
“Have you heard of anyone having this problem – that is to say, have there been cases where someone sold their kidney to a stranger and then ended up with health problems relating to their own kidney? Has this actually happened in this district?”
Answer
“Yes, it has, there’s one serious case I know of. It involves a man in Hamlet 6, a Mr. Ho Van Tranh, 43, who donated a kidney for VND120 million ($6,000). He had serious debts and so sold his kidney for the money to pay off his debts. He now has serious health problems. I recommend you approach is family, they may be willing to tell you more about his case.”
Question
“And what about rumours that criminal gangs have been involved here, luring local people into selling their kidneys. Is that true? Are these rumours accurate?
Answer
We haven’t been able to confirm that criminal gangs are involved. We don’t know. The police are still investigating. However, I can tell you about the case of one man which is rather worrying. It involves a Mr. Le Van Gion, a farmer in Hamlet 6 of ThanhPhu Commune. He submitted an application earlier this year to donate his kidney to someone in Hanoi. His application wasn’t approved but he left home soon after and hasn’t been heard of since, now for more than a month. We believe he went off to sell his kidney. His family haven’t heard from him at all, which is unusual. They are now very worried about his safety. It’s possible a criminal gang may have been involved.”

“I understand that you donated a kidnbey for VND120 million. Is that correct?
Answer (Mr Ho Van Tranh)
“Yes, that’s correct. I did it because I was so much in debt. I did it six months ago. It was for a man in HCM City who I was told was very ill with kidney disease. Both his kidneys had failed. He was going to die unless he got a kidney transplant. I didn’t know him before. I met him once in HCM City, before the operation to do the transplant, but I don’t know where he lives. So I haven’t kept in contact with him and I don’t know his situation now.”
Question
“What are your feelings now, about your decision to sell your kidney? Was it the right decision? Do you regret doing that now?”
Answer
“Well yes I do, I really regret it now. When I came back home after the operation to remove my kidney, my mother saw the scar from the operation on my stomach and she started to cry. She was very upset. And now as a result of the operation I am very weak. I cannot do anything that needs me to be strong. My arms and legs are trembling and shaking all the time. I can’t work. Now I have to depend on my wife. I really regret selling my kidney now.”
