Vietnam lakes maritime development1. Even though Vietnam has a long coastline, the country is still struggling with how to best exploit these advantages in developing a more developed maritime economy.2. Several experts at a forum on the country’s economic and maritime strategy held on October 20 in Hanoi urged the government to invest more in maritime affairs.3. With a coastline of 3,260km, excluding islands, Vietnam boasts an estimated 4.2 million tonnes of fishing reserves and 10 billion tonnes of oil. 4. According to Deputy Head of the Vietnam Maritime Administration Bui Thien Thu, Norway and Vietnam both hold 1,800 vessels under their flags, but the Norwegian fleet's capacity is six times larger. 5. Only 800 ships of Vietnam have capacity of over 1,000 tonnes.6. In addition, the majority of Vietnamese firms are small-scale with average ownership rate of only 1.6 ships.7. Dr. Tran Dinh Thien, Director of the Institute of Economics, said Vietnam maritime development was embarrassingly underdeveloped given the country’s geographical advantages.8. "If we want to see a breakthrough, we need new mechanisms and thinking along with a strategy for maritime development," Thien said.9. Thien went on to say that although Vietnam has 15 maritime economic zones, none of them had recorded any development of note. 10. The government has to carry out detailed research and establish priorities, he said.11. "Developing a maritime economy is also related to strengthening sovereignty," he said12. "Vietnam can't have effective maritime development if it doesn't have a strong presence at sea.
