Flying dreams
"Layang - this is the Malay name for kite," shared Tek Yii Sam, a Keppel Volunteers (KV) committee member, with students at the Vinh Son School in Ho Chi Minh City who looked bright-eyed at the diamond-shape frame he held up. Some of them had never seen, let alone, owned a kite. Yet on those empty frames, they coloured in their aspirations for the future and expressions of friendship. The sweltering heat in the small overcrowded classroom did not stop their enthusiastic banter with the Keppel Volunteers over ideas to decorate the kites.

The kite-making activity saw Keppel Volunteers joining Keppel Land Vietnam's CSR committee members in their outreach programme. Using fun facts and stories, the volunteers also shared culture and social values surrounding the origins of the kite which delighted the children.

It was during the Keppel Community Month in 2013 that volunteers from Keppel Land Vietnam first brought a new lease of life to Vinh Son School in HCMC's District 7 when they completed general electrical and maintenance work in the building and brought staff donations of desktop computers, new school uniforms, books and stationery.

"The volunteers and staff at Keppel Land Vietnam have been sharing gifts and leading crafts workshops at the school prior to the Christmas season. I even involved my mother, a retired educator who has spent eleven years in Vietnam to help us lead in the craft activities.

"As we continue to develop our CSR programme in HCMC, it will be important to meet regularly with the teachers and understand what support would be beneficial to them for the long term. We can then plan meaningful contributions to ensure that the students attending Vin Son have the opportunity to acquire a successful education. It is no cliché to state that the children are the future," shared Mr Ryan Lower, Deputy Director Property Management & CFU and Chairman of the Keppel Land CSR Committee.

Keppel Volunteer Yii Sam added,"The Vinh Son school caters to very low income families who were hawkers from the nearby market. The classroom spaces were extremely small and cramped. However, I was surprised that despite the challenges, this did not stop the students' eagerness to learn.When we interacted with the students in English, they were so happy. Our Vietnamese colleagues were very supportive. They did not only help to translate but also actively engaged with the children during the kite-making session."

Giving back to society
Volunteers from Keppel Land's office in Ho Chi Minh City (HCMC) continue to engage residents of its two adopted charities, Mother La Vang Home and Phan Sinh Home in the Dong Nai province. Since 2008, Keppel Land has been supporting these homes which provide shelter for the underprivileged children, orphans and elderly with special needs. In addition to contributing time and effort, staff also rallied their families and friends to raise funds and donate basic necessities such as food, clothes and water filtration systems to the homes. Employees also collaborated with Tan Truong, the main contractor for Riviera Point in District 7, to spruce up the Vinh Son Primary School in June 2013. The improvement works carried out by the team included repainting of walls, installation of lights, fans and electricity fixtures as well as a general clean-up of the school. Keppel Land also donated desktop computers and fire extinguishers, which were items on the school's wish list.
A patron of the arts, Keppel Land also supported the Saigon Philharmonic Orchestra's fundraising efforts with a sponsorship of US$5,000 to the group in 2013. Through its support, Keppel Land hopes to enrich the cultural life of the Vietnamese in HCMC and enhance their appreciation of classical music and orchestral performance.
