Chinese demand for Australian coking coal soft despite higher domestic prices

The Australian coking coal market has remained in bad shape in the first half of the week. As before, there is no demand for high-quality material, and its quotations are standing at $109-110/t FOB. Demand for lower-quality product has begun waning as well. Suppliers are holding ground, still feeling a glimmer of hope for an upturn in buying by the Chinese.
Chinese mining companies have decided to raise prices again citing growing interest in extra coal from merchant coke producers in the run-up to winter, market players told Metal Expert. Prices for domestic coal have risen by $1-3/t to $108-118/t CFR inclusive of 17% VAT. This has not spurred imports though. Mills consider buying semi-soft coal now.
Bids are not going above $90/t CFR, but duty payment should be taken into account as well.
