Threat of new entrants to the industry is insubstantial. This is because of the significant industry barriers that relate to massive financial investments and technological know-how. Moreover, due to its global scale of operations Microsoft derives tremendous cost advantages out of the economics of scale and this advantage is not available to new entrants, at least during the initial stages of operations.

At the same time, in the US alone, the volume of sales in the industry is expected to reach all-time high of USD 214 billion in 2015 which is a growth of 1.2% compared to the previous year[2], and these figures most likely to attract new entrants to the industry.
