European steelmakers may invest some EUR 500 million into new products in 2014

By the end of the year, European steelmakers will invest at least EUR 500 million into development of new products
to maintain steel supplies to car makers in the long run, representatives of the industries told Metal Expert.
Automotive companies are striving to decrease car weight by using alternative materials to reduce CO2 emissions by
cutting fuel consumption. Ernst & Young’s executive told Metal Expert that average weight of a car in Europe would go
down by 0.2 t from 2011 to 1.2 t by 2020. Thus, steel spare parts will account for just 40% of total vehicle weight in
2020, as compared to 60% in 2011.
Steel producers, in turn, reject this scenario actively investing into development of new high-strength steels.
Specifically, ArcelorMittal has some 60 new products for car making under development. The company has set to
make 10 types of new products in 2014. ArcelorMittal invested EUR 200 million ($270 million) into the project.
Austria’s Voestalpine also makes optimistic forecasts for steel in the automotive sector. “Vehicles are now made by
60% of steel, with the rest being aluminium and plastics in equal portions. Supplies will not change, and our steel will
be consumed in the same volume in 2020,” Wolfgang Eder, CEO of Voestalpine, said. The company counts on
development of hybrid automotive materials, like steel-cord reinforced plastics, and usage of ultra high strength steel
with composite materials.
UK’s Tata Steel Europe has launched 30 new products in 2013-2014 and keeps expanding its product mix, for
automotive sector in particular.
