As expected, level of competition is the major determinant of
competitiveness. As the number of bidders increases, the probability of getting the job decreases. It is interesting to note that
attitude of the host government is one of the most significant
determinants of competitiveness and is even more important than
the company’s experience. It may be argued that entry barriers
exist for contractors in some international markets because of the
host government’s policy. Similarly, a favorable attitude on the
part of the host government may increase competitiveness of contractors in some countries. Also, cultural/religious similarities
give Turkish contractors a source of comparative national advan-tage. Finally, results demonstrate that where strict quality requirements exist, competitiveness of Turkish contractors decreases.
Quality differentiation is not among the major strengths of Turkish contractors in international markets. In conclusion, competitiveness of Turkish contractors is expected to be high in international markets where the country factors are favorable ~e.g.,
favorable attitude of host government, cultural/religious similarities! and where they can use their risktaking ability and experience together with their lowcost advantage
