The mechanism of our memory device, including the sudden jump of the current in the I–V scan, is likely due tocharge transfer from the RNA to the Pt NPs under the highelectric field, subsequently changing the conductivity of thematerial system23. Once the charge is being transferred, it will betrapped in the nanoparticles and stabilized by the coat proteins. As this is an electrical field effect, when sufficient numbers of sitesare established, a sudden jump of current accompanying thecharge tunnelling through the nanoparticles is observed. Theactivation energy of charge trapping and the temperaturedependentcharge retention are strong evidence for the trappingbehaviour of nanoparticles. After a couple of charges arede-trapped from the nanoparticles, and return to the RNA, theconductivity of the material system drops to the OFF state.
