Carbon monoxide (CO) poisoning is common. Unintentional, non–fire-related COpoisoning is responsible for approximately 15,000 emergency department (ED) visitsand nearly 500 deaths annually in the United States.1,2 CO is frequently unrecognizedbecause the signs and symptoms are relatively nonspecific; consequently, the true incidenceof CO poisoning remains unknown. Mortality rates range between 1% and 31%.
