As such, lithology and lithological changes due to stratigraphy are of paramount importance over the course of a single hole. Strength and elasticity properties of different rock types will affect how the fractures form in the rock and what shapes the broken pieces will take (Tarbuck, E.J. and Lutgens, F.K., 1993). On a smaller scale, the chemical structure will determine how easy it is for the atoms within the rock to separate from one another. This is best explained by Liu and Karen‐Yin (2001):“In addition to structure properties, rock strength and fracture properties and its abrasiveness have significant influence on the drilling process. The brittleness of rock and its ability to release deformation energy by crack propagation will affect the results of drilling and blasting.”
