In terms of human-equivalent waste

In terms of human-equivalent waste production, Bergheim, Sivertsen & Selmer-01sen
(1982) used figures of 11-88 g N/day and 2-54 g P/day. Similar figures (11 g N/day and
3g P/day) were derived for waste production from rural coastal populations in Hong
Kong (Mackay 1990). Bergheim et al. (1982) estimated that land-based freshwater trout
farms produced wastes equivalent to 10-314 people for N and 2-169 people for P per
tonne of fish. Bergheim et al. (1993) found that land-based marine salmon farms produced
wastes equivalent to 17 people for N and 12 people for P per tonne of fish. Using these
same equivalent figures, the results from this study indicate that intensive shrimp farms
produce a total waste equivalent to 73-85 and 101-161 people for N and P per tonne
of shrimp respectively. Extrapolating these figures, assuming that 85% of Thailand's
163 000t/year shrimp production was farmed intensively (Anon. 1992b), the 40000 ha of
intensive shrimp ponds currently cultivated produce N waste equivalent to 3-1—3-6 million
people and P equivalent to 4-6-7-3 million people. This is equivalent to 5-6% and 7 - 1 1%
of the Thai population of 65 million people for N and P respectively. If production of
BOD (35 000t/year) and dry sediment (16-2 million t/year) is taken into consideration,
the intensive shrimp culture industry clearly makes a large contribution to the waste
loading of the Thai coastal environment. The causes of, and potential solutions for, high
effluent loadings from intensive shrimp ponds are discussed in more detail in Briggs (1993)
and in a forthcoming paper by these authors.
