Thank you for your email and your interest in Syracuse University. There are no minimum number of credits required in order to apply to transfer to SU; you may transfer after one semester or as late as your senior year – it really depends on what your plans are. There are no specific prerequisite courses required to transfer unless you are interested in Engineering. To be competitive for engineering you will need to take physics and pre-calculus/calculus. If you are interested in Business you will need to take statistics, pre-calculus or calculus, microeconomics, and macroeconomics to be competitive.

We encourage all transfer students to meet the first year student’s deadlines if at all possible. The first year Early Decision deadline is November 15th for the fall semester. The transfer spring semester deadline is also November 15th. The Early Decision 2 deadline is January 1st. The Regular Decision deadline for Fall is also January 1st. We will continue to accept transfer student applications on a rolling basis until July 1st for the fall semester. We will notify you as soon as possible once your application has completed and gone through review.

Reactivating your application:
If you have applied within the last year, it is possible to simply reactivate your previous application. We keep applications on file for one year; to reactivate your application you will need to reply to [e-mail] with an official request to reactivate your application. Please state the specific semester you want to reactivate for, the specific program and college you want to be considered for, the college name where you have been taking classes. You will also need to submit two professor recommendations along with updated official college transcripts.

Credit Transfer:
If you have less than 30 credits at the time you submit your application, we will require your high school transcript and SAT or ACT scores. If you have 30 or more college credits, we will only need to see your college transcripts. After students are admitted to the University, representatives of the college you were admitted into (your home college at SU) will determine the number of credits that will successfully transfer. Transfer credit is evaluated after you are admitted, and generally, notification of approved credit is sent within two weeks of notification of acceptance. You do not have to commit to enrolling until you have received your credit evaluation. We will accept transfer credits from an accredited university or college for most liberal arts courses for which you earn a C or better. During orientation weekend you will meet with your advisor and you will be able to discuss your academic standing and confirm that the credits you have earned have all been recorded. SU will accept up to 66 credits from a two-year college and 90 credits from a four-year institution.

Academic scores are of course critical, but they are also one of many things we look at when reviewing an application. As you can see from the above information, we are really looking for a holistic picture of a student. There is no one thing that will set one application above another; it’s really the composite picture we receive from first and foremost academic scores, then the application itself including the recommendation letters, short answers on the SU Supplement, and the personal essay. There is no minimum GPA needed to apply to or be accepted at Syracuse University, but as a guideline the average GPA of this year’s freshman class is running 3.7. For Transfer students, the average GPA is running 3.3.

There is no minimum score on the SAT or ACT, but the middle 50 percent of the scores on the SAT, for math/critical reading sections are averaging 1190. We superscore the SATs which means students are able to take the test as many times as they want or feel necessary; we will use their highest math, reading and writing scores for the SAT even if they were achieved on separate sittings. We do not require any SAT Subject Tests and we do not accept the SAT IIs. The average ACT Composite was a 26; we do not superscore the ACTs. For the ACTs we do require the writing portion. Please keep in mind, these numbers are basic averages and applicants with these scores are not guaranteed admission to the University.

Admissions Process and Financial Aid:
There are several qualities we look for in a student in addition to academics. The Admissions Committee takes a holistic view when reviewing applications. The committee considers a student’s personal essays, teacher recommendations, counselor evaluations, and extracurricular activities. Students applying for one of our talent based programs, such as architecture, art, music, or drama, will also need to submit a portfolio or an audition which will be reviewed by a faculty member from that program. That portfolio/audition carries 50% of our admission decision.

The SU application and instructions are on our main website. Students fill out the common application for transfers as well as the SU supplement. Students need to write a personal essay and provide two professor recommendations that will go along with OFFICIAL college transcripts.

Students need to apply for financial aid by February 1st by filling out the FAFSA and a CSS profile. Another good resource for outside funding is www.fastweb.com – this is a free national database of scholarships and grants available. Once applications are received, students get an SU ID which gives them access to MySlice, an SU secure portal which provides access to all their information, application, student email, bursars, etc.. MySlice will also generate a to-do list to help make sure applications are complete. Once a student receives notification of admittance, they will get access to housing and meal plans through myslice.
