b-Glucosidases have beenclassified into glycoside hydrolase (GH) families GH1,GH3, GH5, GH9, and GH30, based on their amino acidsequences, while other b-glucosidases remain to be classified. The GH1, GH5, and GH30 b-glucosidases fall in GHClan A, which consists of proteins with (b/a)8-barrelstructures. In contrast, the active site of GH3 enzymescomprises two domains, while GH9 enzymes have (a/a)6barrel structures. The mechanism by which GH1 enzymesrecognize and hydrolyze substrates with different speci-ficities remains an area of intense study.
