Hospital porter

Hours37.5-40 per week
Starting salary£15,100 + per year
A hospital porter supports patients by helping them to move around the hospital - for example, from a ward to an x-ray department. You would help them into wheelchairs or onto trolleys. You would also take them to appointments and bring them back to their ward. If you are looking for a varied and supportive role, helping keep a hospital running smoothly, this could be the ideal job for you.

To become a hospital porter, you will need to have a friendly and helpful manner. You’ll need to be able to work under pressure. You will also have to cope well with difficult situations.

You do not usually need any specific qualifications to become a hospital porter but you will need to be physically fit.

Work activities

You duties would include:

transferring patients to and from wards and departments
dealing with incoming and outgoing mail
delivering clean linen to wards from the laundry
collecting domestic and clinical waste, some of which may be hazardous
moving furniture and medical equipment safely
transferring files, specimen samples and pharmacy boxes to different parts of the hospital
removing deceased patients to the mortuary.
Your work could take you anywhere on the hospital site. In some hospitals you would help with security, which could involve working on the reception desk and doing patrols.

Working hours and conditions

You would work about 37.5 to 40 hours a week, including shifts and weekends. Part-time hours are often possible.

Income

Starting salaries are usually from £15,100 to around £18,000. Team leaders can earn up to £21,000 a year.

There are additional payments for working overtime and shifts. Salaries in private hospitals are based on those in the NHS.

Figures are intended as a guideline only.

Entry requirements

You do not usually need any particular qualifications to become a hospital porter but employers will expect you to be physically fit, as the job involves a lot of walking and manual duties, for instance transferring patients on trolleys between wards.

You will also need good communication skills and a sensitive approach when dealing with patients and their families. It might help you if you have a manual handling, or health and safety qualification although your employer will train you on these when you start.

You may need a driving licence for some jobs that involve working at different sites during a shift.

Experience of working with the public, especially in a caring role, would be useful. If you do not have relevant experience, you could learn about this role by volunteering in a hospital, helping out with porter duties. Contact the voluntary services coordinator or manager at your local NHS trust for further advice.

Training and development

You will normally receive training on the job, working alongside experienced colleagues. You will also have a short induction course when you start, covering:

hospital procedures, practices and layout
health and safety, and hygiene
safe lifting, moving and handling
transporting patients safely.
You may be encouraged to work towards a qualification, for example the Level 2 Certificate/Level 3 Diploma in Healthcare Support Services.

Skills, interests and qualities

To become a hospital porter, you will need to have:

good communication skills
a friendly and helpful manner
a good level of physical fitness for loading and pushing heavy trolleys
the ability to cope well under pressure
the ability to act calmly and quickly in emergencies
the ability to follow instructions
