SC-15 epoxy resin manufactured by Applied Poleramic Inc.
and Nanomer® I. 28 E nanoclay supplied by Nanocor Inc. were
used in this study. SC-15 is a toughened two component (Part A:
diglycidylether of bisphenol A, aliphatic diglycidylether and epoxy
toughner, Part B: hardener) room temperature cure epoxy resin
with low viscosity of 300 cps and pot life of 6 h. Nanomer® I-28 E
nanoclay is a naturally occurring montmorillonite; a 2–1 layered
clay mineral with a plate like structure. This nanoclay has a thickness of the order of 1 nm and lateral dimensions of several microns
thereby providing a large aspect ratio. In order to interact chemically with the epoxy system it is modified with proprietary onium
functional groups which modify the clay surface from hydrophilic
to hydrophobic and make clay particles compatible with the epoxy
resin. The physical properties of I.28E montmorillonite nanoclay
are shown in Table 1
