A data grid consists of
computational and storage resources in different locations connected by high-speed networks. They are
especially targeted to large scientific applications such as high energy physics experiments at the Large Hadron
Collidor [136], astronomy projects – Virtual Observatories [137], and protein simulation – BioGrid [138] that
require analyzing huge amount of data. The data generated from an instrument, experiment, or a network of
sensors is stored at a principle storage site and is transferred to other storage sites around the world on request
through the data replication mechanism. Users query the local replica catalog to locate the datasets that they
require. With proper rights and permissions, the required dataset is fetched from the local repository if it is
present there or otherwise it is fetched from a remote repository.
