This and the following subfamily comprise the egg-eating snakes. For an animal not much bigger around than a man's finger to engulf an object the size of a hen's egg is indeed an astounding feat. These snakes accomplish this by one of the most striking series of adaptations to a specialized feeding habit known. There is no mental groove. Instead, the skin along the angle of the mouth and cheek region is especially modified for expansion. The teeth are minute. reduced in number, and restricted to the posterior parts of the maxilla, palatine. and dentary. The upper jaw elements are rigidly fused together, but the bones of the lower jaw are very loosely connected. Most remarkable of all, some of the cervical hypapophysis extend down to pierce the esophagus. Those in front have their ventral edges enlarged into sled like runners, while those behind are modified to form elongate, forward-pointing spines. The egg, which is swallowed whole, ('licles down the runners, and is forced against the sharp edges of the posterior hypapophysis thus being cut open. The contents of the egg pass into the stomach and the crushed shell is then regurgitated.
There is only one species, Dasypeltis scaber, widey distributed in tropical and southern Africa. It is a rather short, slender snake, attaining lengths of about 750 mm.
