Solutions of certain nonlinear oscillation problems can be expressed inclosed form in terms of elliptic integrals. The pendulum is one example ofa nonlinear model exhibiting elliptic functions as solutions. A pendulum isa system with mass m which is kept in orbit by a massless supporting rodof length l (see Figure 2.4.9). The pendulum moves within thegravitational field of the Earth and is thus exposed to the verticalgravitational force mg.
