Four high-school seniors - Julie, her boyfriend Ray, her best friend Helen, and Helen's boyfriend Barry - drive home after a party. While driving, Ray becomes distracted, hitting a pedestrian. As the writing matches that of the note she received, Julie tries convincing Missy that it is not a suicide note but a threat; Missy orders her to leave. At the annual Croaker Pageant, Barry is killed while watching from a balcony. Helen rushes to the balcony with a police officer, finding no sign of the killer or Barry. Fleeing though the back alley's, Helen races towards the parade however is stopped dead in her tracks by the killer, who shoves her into a stack of tires and after a brief struggle, slashes her to death only steps away from the parade. Her cries for help are to no avail as they are drowned out by the noise of the parade.

Ray gives chase, but a fisherman stops him and puts her on his boat for safety. She looks around the boat and finds a room containing photos and articles about her; Julie realizes she is on Ben Willis’s boat. Ben sets the boat adrift and chases Julie. Eventually, she ends up in a room filled with ice and discovers the bodies of Barry and Helen. The killer eventually succeeds in catching her. Ray catches up to Ben's boat with a motorboat. He uses the rigging to cause Ben to lose his hook-carrying hand as he plummets over the side. All that is found of Ben is the severed hand with the hook. When the police question Julie and Ray, they deny having any idea why Ben attempted to kill them.
