IntroductionEngineered ecosystems are characterized by two compo- nents: a biotic component (communities) and a process component (matter and energy flows). Even though they are the key actors of the biological processes, little is known about the microbial communities involved in bioprocesses: how are they influenced by the environmental conditions, and how do they drive the ecosystem function? Unraveling the biotic/abiotic interactions is one of the most challenging issues for ecologists (Briones and Raskin 2003). In addition to a fundamental purpose, this better understanding can provide control, diagnostic and prevision tools for process monitoring.
